Scared about your confidential web files being viewed by some notorious snoopers? We have found a very useful online utility to save you from this nightmare. DirProtect is an online tool which generates .htaccess and .htpasswd files to protect your website directories from being accessed.

The website describes this simple 3 step process with self explanatory illustrations. The live demo given on the website is very useful for people who face difficulty in understanding the technical nuances. The example with which the whole process has been nicely explained uses a directory named “demo” which needs to be protected.

In the first step, you will have to generate .htaccess file by following the steps explicitly mentioned on the home page by clicking the hyperlink “how can I know this path”. Copy the file into the directory which you wish to protect. Then, create the .htpasswd file in which you can add any number of usernames and passwords and copy this file also to directory. For the insertion of files into the directory, you will have to know the server path. Send the directory with these two files to the website. You will be asked for the username and password and even before you realize, your directory becomes protected! The website, however, needs to provide some clarity on why the user would want to use this service.

So, the next time somebody tries to access your web directory will essentially have to type the credentials. Use this easy- to-use tool and save your web directories from those unwanted threats.
