Twitter has become a huge rage these days. Right from school kids to professionals, celebrities to high fliers of the society are using it extensively. For the uninitiated, Twitter, in simple words is the ‘SMS of the internet’. It is a free social networking service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. So, if you want to know anything and everything happening in the world, twitter is the first hand real time information source.

The only problem with Twitter is that its search engine stores tweets of maximum one or two weeks. Searchtastic is a venture which is capitalizing strongly on this one shortcoming of highly popular and widely used Twitter. Searchtastic which calls itself “Smart Twitter Search” provides the user the unique capability to search tweets as old as few months. This search engine has pitched in amazingly where twitter’s very own default search engine has failed. The search engine has a large real time twitter information archive from which any twitter can be pulled up by the user on a single search.

The system has optimal search functionality as the user can search the desired tweet by a simple keyword or hash tag. Another interesting feature of this search engine which makes it a cut above the rest is its ability to search tweets from a particular user. The system also provides the most popular topics or events of that day in a hash tag cloud. The system uses a “click search” interface to make the search process a cakewalk for any user. It has a strong and well maintained database of most popular users which is determined by the number of followers. The top users have been categorized as ‘Top 100’, ‘Top 200’ and likewise. The website owners are planning to introduce add-on features in the coming weeks.

Searchtastic is a fairly new system but it has immense potential. It has managed to hit the bull’s eye by realizing the need of historical tweets owing to the huge success of Twitter. Let’s welcome this highly useful new search kid on the block.
